Beginning Sewing Class: Learn the Basics!
Have you always wanted to learn to sew but weren't sure where to start? This beginner-friendly class is the perfect introduction to sewing! Whether you've never touched a sewing machine or just need a refresher, we'll guide you through the fundamentals in a relaxed, hands-on environment.
During class you'll learn:
- Sewing machine anatomy and basic operation
- How to wind and insert a bobbin
- Choosing the correct needles and thread
- Basic sewing tools and notions, including fabric scissors, straight pins, marking tools, and other essential sewing supplies
- The importance of accurate seam allowances and how to use the machine's seam guides
- Tips for sewing straight, pressing, pivoting corners, and achieving professional-looking results and zipper insertion
After learning the fundamentals, you'll put your new skills into practice by creating a 14" pillow to take home. This simple project is designed to reinforce the techniques you've learned while giving you the confidence to continue sewing on your own.

- Use of our Sew This! classroom sewing machines
- Thread
- Classroom notions and supplies needed during class
- Step-by-step instruction
Students Need to Bring
- Fabric of your choice “1/2 yard” for a 14" pillow (our staff will be happy to help you select an appropriate fabric)
- ½ yd of Shape Flex SF101
- 1- 22” zipper to match your fabric “doesn’t have to be a perfect match”
- Fabric scissors (please do not bring paper scissors)
- Stright pins for securing pattern while cutting / holding layers of fabric in line while sewing
No prior sewing experience is necessary!
Come discover just how fun sewing can be! By the end of class, you'll understand the fundamentals of machine sewing, gain confidence using a sewing machine, and leave with a pillow you made yourself.
